ACTA DIURNA

Western Suburbs Games Society News

December 2004

Up on a Soap Box

Nothing from the committee this month, so I’m putting my two cents worth in.

The main thing to report was that there was a break in at one of the Committee member’s home and the club petty cash tin was stolen, we lost around $120. Luckily the Committee member wasn’t at home. Now days criminals are increasingly breaking into homes while the home owner is inside. We were lucky that we only lost $120 and not had a friend hurt.

The other news is that we are starting to look financially healthy, and the club is on track to restore its emergency fund, our membership has been growing all year and the insurance premium is stable. The EMIRS club in Bondi looked like folding however following advice from Mitchell they have also started Bunnings fund raising BBQs, so a WSGS member has helped keep another club up and running. Also we have been invited back to the Sydney Royal Easter Show for a two day display on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. 25th and 26th March 2005. So Merry Christmas everyone, and I hope Santa brings lots of miniatures, models and paints. Ty Gock (Volunteer Editor)

Arr,

Its bout time we ad a Snatch at da gold me Hearty’s

I is ritten up o’ set of rules to spice up de Pirates standard rules,

for a 1 day campaign, and here they be-

  1. All players will start with 10 gold pieces to buy their ship with, only one ship per person at this pre-game stage, you will be able to buy more ships as the day and campaign goes on. The points of the ship are its cost in gold, and no crew except oarsmen can be bought without a special treasure card, more on that later. Any unused gold goes into the treasure vaults for use later on.
  2. The Game Master, will place all the islands before the players choose a base, and the treasure randomly after all the bases have been chosen.
  3. You can choose your own base island every round, the order that the players choose their home islands in is subject to a secret bid. All players before each round will be able to see the layout of the islands and secretly bid an amount of gold, the highest bidder will choose their island first down to the lowest bidder last. Players can choose to bid 0gp, and all ties at the same bid will be broken by a die roll, highest choosing first.
  4. At this point the game of Pirates is standard and is played as such, the object is to take as much treasure for yourself as possible, the only exceptions are- the round goes on until all the treasure from the neutral islands is taken to base islands, or when only one player has ships floating. Also note if a ship is sunk on the water that had treasure that treasure is lost, not as in the base rules.
  5. War booty- if you derelict an unfriendly ship and successfully toe it to your base island you will sell it at the end of the round, the bounty will be ½ of the original ships cost rounded up. But by all means use it within the round as if it is yours. As usual all treasure on it is now yours and any surviving crew become special treasure for you, again more on that later.
  6. If you have a ship sent to the bottom, you can buy it back for ¾ its cost, if you had a ship bountied you can buy it back for ½ its cost, always round up. Either way all the crew on the ship is lost.
  7. Crew you ask, I will be modifying some of my treasure tokens to indicate the basic crew noted in the rule book, when one of these is found and delivered to you home island you can in-between rounds buy the appropriate crew to man any of you ships, nationality doesn’t matter here and use the bade rule book cost. In the campaign I will not be using any special crew. The only crew readily available are oarsmen, and they can be bought at any in-between round for any ship.
  8. We will play as many rounds in the day as possible, and in-between rounds you can use your gold to buy more ships etc. at the end of the day the person with the biggest total gold in treasury and cost of their ships is declared the winner, and bill be the most hated Pirate in the Spanish Main

I was thinking of running this on the 19/12/04 for the first time, please send me your thoughts, and notes of interest in playing. Rob. rob.harradine@bigpond.com

q       Should WSGS Display days be open to the general public and other club members to enter?

WSGS works closely with a lot of other hobby clubs and in general all the clubs open events up to other club members in recognition of these close ties. I'm proud to say we work closely with the Emperor's Legion, the Western Warriors, we help the Southern Battle Group with participation games at MOAB each year and recently Mitchell helped the EMIRS out in Bondi.

For the last three years we have also work closely with APMA, inviting them to Leviathan and they have in turn assisted us with judging during the Leviathan painting comp. We have welcomed and encouraged APMA members to enter our display days, which they have and it has all been very encouraging.

Unfortunately despite 3 requests in three years they have declined to open up their display days in turn to WSGS members.

They have said that non APMA members can enter the two annual unofficial modelling /- painting competitions as individual run the unofficial competitions and not APMA. I don't know what the issue is and to be honest I’m very disappointed

My initial response was to look at barring APMA members from our display days from 2005 and I did tell the APMA committee this, but in hindsight, I think that would be the wrong response. I understand APMA have their own display days and it is their decision, I also think they their decision is wrong. To reply in kind would make not just me but our club, just as wrong. WSGS has always been about involving other clubs and growing the hobby as a whole, and I think WSGS should not become so narrow minded, that we start closing main stream activities to members only. Therefore despite my angry response to APMA, I’m asking Ross to keep our Display days open to other clubs and the public to participate in.

The new display day organiser for 2005 is Ross Heenan.

Ross is yet to confirm next years display days, however the draft is as follows.

q       6th February                                  Best WWII unit

q       7th August                                      Best Sci Fi Creature

q       18th December                              Best Christmas single miniature

Ty.

q       Ancients Campaign (No miniatures needed)

Here is an idea, for a very simple campaign. Once a month you write a (to the point) email telling me:

·          What you want to do with your country

·          Where this is to occur

·          How you are going to do it

·          Why it should work.

If you are available for a game then indicate that on the email and if you can organise a game. Otherwise the results will be purely based on whether you have convinced the referee. (ME) Given the format this can be as simple or as big as you make it. Orders due by THE 1ST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH.

For  map just use any world map.

q       What your club (WSGS) did in November

q       Bunnings Norwest Ladies (FAMILY) Night Tuesday 9th November 6p.m. to 9p.m.

This was a good night, my kids have had their Santa photos so we don’t have to worry about it later in December.

We got a lot of interest and I wrote out club details to two families before I got to leave for the night.

q       Bunnings Warehouse Norwest - WSGS Promotion and Fund Raising BBQ

q       Saturday 27/11/2004 (Volunteers so far, Michell, Ty (morning only), Ross, 2 more needed)

A special thanks to Michell, Ross, Jacqueline, Angie and Beau for helping out at the Bunnings Fund raising BBQ. After getting there early (7.30am), we started late with a slight hick up with the gas cylinder. (Next time we bring a spare, something to learn from) Still Jacqueline rushed out and got the cylinder refilled. I left at 9.40am because Kim had the NSW school spectacular on at the Entertainment centre. Just when it looked like we were going to be short staffed (only 2, Michell and Ross), Beau saved the day when he turned up (his employer didn’t ring him to work on the day) so he came to Bunnings to help us.  In future we will stick to around 50-55kgs of sausages, 65kgs was way too much, despite being told that we would sell them, we didn’t. Drinks however sold like crazy, and we raised after expenses close to $1000 for the club. Ty
